What is the NDIS? A quick overview of the National Disability Insurance Scheme

What is the NDIS

What is the NDIS?

The NDIS is a new system of providing support to people with a disability, their families, and carers. It uses an insurance approach similar to Medicare, meaning the costs for disability care are shared amongst the wider community.

The NDIS has been designed to give people with a disability greater choice and control over the support they receive, providing eligible individuals with funding based on their personal needs and lifelong goals and aspirations.

The NDIS is based on human rights principles – freedom, choice, control and having a good life!

The NDIS is being progressively rolled out across Australia under the management of the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) – the agency responsible for delivering the scheme. The rollout is due to be completed by 2020.

Why was the NDIS introduced?

Before the NDIS was introduced, disability services in Australia had been a lottery.

People were receiving different levels of support depending on how, when and where their disability was acquired and where they have lived – and not everyone was getting a fair go.

After an enquiry was held, the Federal Government agreed that people with a disability deserved a fairer system, and more control over the services they receive. So in July 2013, the NDIS was introduced.

What does the NDIS mean for people with a disability?

For those eligible, the NDIS means greater choice and control over the disability services you receive.

You will be able to work out what reasonable and necessary supports you will need to live your life and achieve your goals. You’ll then receive funding to pay for these supports.

You not only get to choose what type of supports you receive, but also when, where and how you receive them – and which disability service providers you’ll work with. You can even have control over how your funds are managed.
