Who can volunteer?
House with No Steps welcomes any volunteer aged 16 - 80 years who wishes to make a difference to the lives of people with a disability. Regardless of education, background or skill set, we’d love to hear from you.
Is there a minimum age to volunteer?
16 years old.
Will I have to complete reference, employment and other checks?
Yes. House with No Steps requires a personal reference letter from all volunteers.
Due to the nature of our work, we require volunteers to pass a Police Check (NSW) and if needed, a Working with Children Check. House with No Steps will assist with and pay for these applications.
How do I apply?
Please complete the volunteer application or view our current volunteer positions.
After I have sent my application how long does it take until I start?
This will depend on availability of volunteering opportunities and your preferred role. If there is an appropriate volunteer position available, the process usually takes up to a month.
How will you process my application?
Once we have received your application, our Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to talk through what role may be suitable. We will then send you an information pack including Police Check and Working with Children forms which you must complete and return to House with No Steps.
You will then be invited to attend a face-to-face interview and if you are successful, we will agree on a start date.
Will I need to be interviewed?
House with No Steps organises face-to-face interviews for all volunteer roles. This allows us to get to know you and gives you the opportunity to learn more about the volunteer role and House with No Steps.
Does House with No Steps hire volunteers?
House with No Steps encourages any volunteer to apply for advertised paid positions for which they are suitable. It is important to understand that a volunteer role doesn’t necessarily lead to employment. Like everyone else, volunteers must go through the standard recruitment process.
How many hours do you require from volunteers?
There are a range of volunteer roles which all require different time commitments. We are flexible and we can work with you and your availability to find a role which is suits you.
Can I volunteer if I work full time?
Yes, however this may depend on the service you would like to volunteer with. There may also be opportunities to be involved in short-term or one-off projects.
Will it cost me anything?
There are no costs involved in becoming a volunteer, however, if you are volunteering as a companion to someone, you will need to cover the costs of any activities you do together such as going for a coffee or to the movies. House with No Steps may reimburse reasonable expenses which would need to be agreed to previously with your supervisor.
Will I need to arrange my own transport?
Yes. You will need to travel to and from your position by private or public transport.
If you are supporting someone with a disability, at times you may need to drive yourself and the person you are supporting. In some cases you may drive House with No Steps vehicles. HWNS may reimburse reasonable expenses such as petrol which would need to be agreed to previously with your supervisor.
Can I just volunteer for a few days or weeks?
At times we do have short-term or one-off projects available. We encourage expressions of interest from anyone regardless of your availability.
How can my company volunteer?
