Ben's Story

Goodwill is a seed from which greater things grow.
As one of our most loyal donors I would like to share this special story with you. Ben is an inspiration and a role model to everyone he comes into contact with. He is a genuine example of the House With No Steps philosophy, focusing on his abilities rather than his disability.

Ben may have an intellectual disability but he has many outstanding abilities. He is a regular fundraiser for a variety of worthwhile causes, always rolling his sleeves up and getting as involved as he possibly can. Ben tells us, "I just like to help people in need and to help make them happy".

Ben has been a valued supported employee at House With No Steps now for 25 years. House With No Steps, Summerland House, employs 87 people with varying disabilities across our agricultural and tourism businesses. Ben has fulfilled a number of these roles including working on our Avocado & Macadamia property, Fruit Packing Shed, Wholesale Nursery and more recently in the Turning Point Café & Function Centre where he is thriving. Ben is an extremely enthusiastic person and the opportunity to be able to serve others is an absolute joy to him. "I like working with more people and meeting and greeting customers", exclaims Ben.

abilities and provides opportunities for them to bloom.
Ben has had learning difficulties associated with his disability, which can be tough when working in a busy cafe. With the support from House With No Steps Ben has conquered a number of these obstacles, to personally achieve what many others thought was beyond him. Handling pressure, staying focussed and rising above his limited numeracy & literacy abilities have been accomplished. "You just got to put your mind to it and I reckon you can achieve anything ", says Ben.
Ben is a regular high achiever - he has recently received achievement certificates to assist in
furthering his career in the hospitality industry.

Ben is all about community. He is his local Rugby League team Mascot and can be found volunteering on the BBQ at every home game. He regularly helps out with the raffles for Lismore City Rugby, is a member of Lismore Deep Sea Fishing Club and also a regular with the Golden Oldies Rugby Union too!

He certainly hasn’t let having a disability limit him. He is a role model, a fundraiser, an extremely busy volunteer and an outstanding citizen of the community. House With No Steps supports Ben with training, employment, social and community support, recreational activities and transport.

Now more than ever we need your help so we can continue to be there for Ben and other people with disabilities in your community. House With No Steps offers a warm and inclusive community for every person with a disability.

As a donor, you are a part of this community too. The support that you offer is fundamental to the wellbeing of our clients. We have been providing support and opportunities to people with disabilities for nearly fifty years. We really appreciate your ongoing commitment and assistance in making this possible, particularly in tough economic times when obtaining funding for our programs is a challenge. Please donate whatever you can to help us continue to support people with disabilities in our community.
