It is really something to bring a bright future to bright young Australians.
We would like to share this special story with you.
If you read about what Peter has had to endure at times you would wonder why he is always Smiling. He smiles because he is a shining example of the House With No Steps model of
focusing on his abilities rather than his disability.
When Peter was 18 months he was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus, a serious brain swelling condition.
“I have a shunt that runs from my brain into my stomach. It has been in my heart before too.
When the pressure goes up [in his brain] I have severe headaches, vomiting, blurry vision and
epileptic seizures.”
Due to this disability, Peter can also become very forgetful, which is a big obstacle to getting and keeping a job.
Twenty operations later, he still has this incurable, lifelong, disabling condition - but that doesn’t faze him. Peter doesn’t see having a disability as an uphill battle.
“I’ve got to think positive and look to the future and not look backwards.”
Thanks to House With No Steps, that is exactly what Peter can to do – look forward to his
future. House With No Steps goes the extra distance to ensure that people with disabilities have
the opportunity to learn new skills in a supportive environment.
Peter is a very hard worker in our Sydney site services team. “HWNS is a great place to work. All
the new things I’m learning are unbelievable. I’ve really improved and gone to the next level. I
feel more settled and stable. I feel like I am getting somewhere.”
Peter’s dad Eric agrees “That Peter can go and do something and feel wanted is marvelous”.
At HWNS we adopt a holistic approach and offer support and services to assist people with disabilities
in all areas of their life.
Peter is also a regular at House With No Steps’ Live It Up program.
“It gets me out of the house, having fun
and meeting new friends. All my friends go to Live It Up.”
At the moment HWNS can only afford to fund limited number of people to participate in our Live It Up program. There is a large waiting list.
We need your help so that there will always be room for people like Peter in our programs.
Live It Up is solely funded by generous donations, from people like you. Without this program, people like Peter would miss this vital opportunity to meet friends in a fun, safe environment.
Peter now has greater quality of life because House With No Steps provides him with opportunities for employment, skills development, a place to meet friends and to live independently.
House With No Steps offers a warm and inclusive community for every person with a disability.
As a donor, you are a part of this community too. The support that you offer is fundamental to the
wellbeing of our clients.
