House With No Steps, a leading provider of support for Australians with disabilities, is operating fifteen new respite services across NSW and Queensland. The respite services support carers of people with disabilities and mental illnesses to cope with the demands of full-time care. Our services are tailored to the unique needs and desires of the individual, structured and implemented in a true ‘person-centred’ planning approach. We encourage theinvolvement of family, advocates, guardians and friends in an effort to enhance existing relationships and foster new ones.  

Ten of the services will have an initial focus on supporting older parent carers of people with a disability. A further five services will support carers of people with mental illness or intellectual disabilities including autism. HWNS plans to provide at least 350 additional respite places for these carers over the next three years. They will provide a diverse range of services from community and recreation access to in home and centre based respite, social supports and “respite effect” services according to the funding model and region. Carers provide vital but widely unrecognised support for family members who might otherwise require full time residential care, at a massive cost to taxpayers.

The ongoing support of the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHSCIA) and of the State Disability Departments , NSW Dept of Ageing, Disability and HomeCare (DADHC); and Disability Services Queensland( DSQ) in funding respite services and other supports for service users is gratefully acknowledged.
