It is really something to bring a bright future to bright young Australians.
As one of our most loyal donors I would like to share this special story with you.
Wendy has a moderate intellectual disability. Before she came to Bowerbird Group Home in South Nowra, just after her 18th birthday, Wendy shared a house with nine other foster children.
Thanks to House With No Steps (HWNS), Wendy now has a secure and permanent home. The Group Home enables Wendy to live as independently as possible. For the first time in her life she has her own room. “I have my own cupboard and my own privacy” says Wendy with a smile.
Wendy loves to sing and dance and now she can go to her own room to play her favourite song ‘Dancing Queen’ by ABBA whenever she likes. Sometimes she shares her talents with her house mates.
“I sing in front of my friends and then I dance.” Wendy is now living a life she would never have known. Wendy had her very first trip on a train recently and has just experienced the Easter Show. She was in such amazement that her mouth remained open in awe the whole day. Wendy is finally experiencing things that most kids take for granted.
House With Steps is committed to providing services that are person centred. This means that people with disabilities, like Wendy, are able to have a say in how they want to live their life and the way they wish to be supported. Wendy is gaining more confidence as each day passes and is making more decisions for herself.
This “Dancing Queen” is now dancing her way through life. She has progressed from a clumsy half step to a superb pirouette. Wendy is very quiet and wouldn’t speak up for herself. That can make her very vulnerable. It is extremely important that House With No Steps is there to support people like Wendy and provide her with the opportunity to learn basic life skills like shopping, cooking, budgeting and banking.
“I am learning cooking and to eat healthy food.”
At HWNS we adopt a holistic approach and offer support and services to assist people with disabilities in all areas of their life. Wendy also takes part in House With No Steps’ Community Participation Program where she is provided with work experience and the opportunity to enjoy recreational activities.
She also does volunteer work to support the community at large. Now more than ever we need your help so we can continue to be there for Wendy and other people with disabilities in your community.
Wendy now has purpose in her life because House With No Steps provides her with employment, skills development, a place to meet friends and the opportunity to enjoy new experiences. House With No Steps offers a warm and inclusive community for every person with a disability. As a donor, you are a part of this community too.
The support that you offer is fundamental to the wellbeing of our clients.
