Your NDIS FAQs answered by our team

The NDIS represents an exciting time, but there are probably lots of things you’d like to ask and NDIS information you would like to know. We’ve answered some of the most commonly asked questions below.

What is the NDIS?

The NDIS is the National Disability Insurance Scheme which will reform the way disability services are funded and delivered.

The NDIS uses an insurance approach similar to Medicare, which means that the costs of disability for a person will be shared among the wider community. It will provide people with a disability direct access to a pool of funds. Each person’s eligibility and budget is based on an assessment of their individual needs. Find out more about the NDIS.

What is the NDIA?

The NDIA is the National Disability Insurance Agency, an independent statutory agency whose role it is to implement the NDIS.

Does HWNS have any NDIS experience?

Yes, House with No Steps was one of the first service providers to transition to the NDIS.

We have been working in the NDIS environment in NSW since July 2013, the ACT since July 2014, and more recently Qld. We have established new roles, set up new ways of doing business, established and streamlined our procedures and worked closely with individuals, families, staff, and the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to ensure best outcomes for people.

When will the NDIS be available?

To make sure the NDIS is implemented successfully, it will be introduced over several years. The first stage of the NDIS was launched July 2013 in four locations throughout Australia. The full scheme will be progressively rolled out by 2020. Visit our roll out page for more information.

Until the scheme has been rolled out in your area, existing Commonwealth, state and territory government funded disability services will continue.

Who will be eligible for the NDIS?

Eligibility will depend on whether you meet the requirements for disability or early intervention support, your location and age.

For more information visit our NDIS eligibility page.

What will the NDIS offer me?

The NDIS will have a range of benefits for those who are eligible including:

  • A fairer funding system that will replace current state funding systems
  • Choice and control; you choose how, when, and where you receive support
  • Long term, sustainable funding which will allow your support to change as your life and needs change
  • Assistance to make informed choices
  • Safeguards to support you in exercising your choice and control
  • Early intervention to minimise the impacts and avoid a crisis point
  • The opportunity to participate in your community
  • Information about disability and services available to you including community resources and government programs

How will my funding be managed?

You can choose to manage your funding through one of the following four options:

  1. Self-management
  2. A plan ‘nominee’
  3. A registered plan management provider
  4. NDIA.

What will the NDIS cover?

The NDIS will fund reasonable and necessary supports that help someone with a disability to:

  • pursue their goals, objectives and aspirations
  • increase their independence
  • increase social and economic participation, and
  • develop their capacity to actively take part in the community.

This support may include education, employment, social participation, independence, living arrangements, and health and well-being.

Can I start planning with you prior to my NDIS appointment?

Yes, we offer a free pre-planning service where we can:

  • Involve the people who know you best to help with planning and identifying goals and dreams
  • Discuss what is working well for you and what is not in areas such as daily life and living arrangements, relationships and informal supports, supports from service providers, and equipment needs
  • Work with you to identify your goals for social and community participation, employment, education, health and well-being.

House with No Steps has also developed a pre-planning tool, About Me, to assist people with a disability and their families to prepare for the transition to the scheme.

Will HWNS support me to use my funding flexibly?

Yes, House with No Steps will work with you to ensure you have the support you need and want, when you want it.

Do I have a choice about staff that will support me?

Yes, you can let us know the kind of person you are looking for and we will find a staff member who matches your needs and interests.

How does HWNS ensure my family is included?

We recognise the important role that families play in all our lives. You can invite family members to be a part of your planning process, in setting up your supports, including meeting with staff members and/or being involved in the recruitment of staff, and reviewing the supports provided. You might like your family members included a lot, or a little – the choice is yours.

How does HWNS work individually with people, especially in group accommodation?

House with No Steps staff work with each person as an individual, no matter what type of supports they receive. We use a person centred approach which involves listening to each person, involving the person and the family members they wish to be involved in planning and establishing supports.

We have a strong focus on supporting personal outcomes and undertake reviews, adjusting supports to ensure that they are delivering what the person wants in a way that works for them.

In group accommodation settings we ensure that staff rosters will provide opportunities for each person to be supported with their individual needs and goals in home and the community.

Can I meet with staff before I agree to using them?

Yes, we can arrange for you to meet staff and you can let us know if you think the staff member is a good match for you.

Can I have a schedule of when HWNS staff will be working with me?

Yes, as part of our planning process we will look at what supports you are seeking and when you would like to have your supports and will create a calendar with you.

I am already a HWNS service user; will my current support change once I come across to NDIS?

The NDIA will contact you to discuss the supports you are currently receiving (House with No Steps can help you with this). If you are happy with the support you currently receive from House with No Steps and the same supports are identified in your plan with NDIA then you can choose to continue to receive these same supports.

What happens if I am an existing HWNS service user but am not eligible for support from NDIA?

If you are not eligible for the NDIS but are already receiving support from House with No Steps, you will still be able to access the same level of supports you already have in place. Governments have agreed that no one should be disadvantaged by transitioning to the NDIS and are currently finalising arrangements of how this will work.

Apart from group living, what other accommodation support is available?

House with No Steps can support you with a whole range of accommodation supports. For example we can:

  • provide drop in support if you are living in the community in your own place and just need a few hours of support a day, or week.
  • assist you with getting out to do your shopping
  • support you with learning to take care of your own home
  • link with you with others who would like to share, support you to find accommodation and set up the supports you need to make it work for you.

We are happy to work with you to come up with what will work best for you in your local community.

How will HWNS provide us with information about other options?

Our staff have a strong knowledge of local networks and services. We will provide information and connect you with local activities, groups, services and events that are relevant to your interests and goals.

House with No Steps is committed to working in partnership with other organisations, acknowledging the variety of options and possibilities that are available. We can connect you with resources which provide other options.
