Logan Village innovative housing project opens

Four gentlemen – Clay, Carlo, Daniel and Terrence – have moved back into the community with the opening of new purpose-built specialist disability accommodation in Logan Village, Queensland.

The project was completed in a partnership between the Queensland Government and House with No Steps (now Aruma).

John Jensen, Regional General Manager, said the five self-contained units cater for individuals with high physical support needs. The units are equipped with assistive technology such as fully automated doors and a call system so support staff can be alerted if there are any issues. There is also a communal kitchen, dining and entertainment area.

“We’re thrilled to have partnered with the Queensland Government on the development, design and construction of this much-needed housing.

“Our customers all came from medically-based environments where meals, furniture, day-to-day items and even activities did not always suit their individual needs. This new model of living is all about giving them ultimate choice and control. It’s already making a real difference to their lives,” he said.

Finding the right support staff was also paramount. We undertook a process to recruit staff based on the likes, interests and support needs of their customers.

“We have a versatile and dynamic team who are working with customers towards individual outcomes, for example a staff member who speaks Spanish is supporting one of the customers with his goal of learning Spanish,” said Mr Jensen.

To make this project a reality, the Queensland Government provided around $1.17 million. House with No Steps (now Aruma) contributed over $400,000.

The project took 2 and a half years to complete and was officially opened on Tuesday 14 August 2018.
